Riddell Unveils New ND6 Helmet Line Engineered for Youth Football Players

The next generation of youth helmets are launching ahead of the 2026 season, reinforcing Riddell’s commitment to player protection and helping programs prepare for the new equipment standard. Learn more through the frequently asked questions below.

What is the Riddell ND6 Helmet Line?

The Riddell ND6 line represents the next generation of youth football helmets from Riddell. The name ND6 originates from the new youth helmet standard ND006, established by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

NOCSAE develops and publishes performance standards for football helmets and related equipment. The Riddell ND6 helmets produced for the 2026 football season will meet the new standards set forth by NOCSAE, ahead of the effective date of September 1, 2027.

Why is Riddell launching ND6 now?

Player protection is always our top priority. By introducing the ND6 line ahead of the 2027 effective date, Riddell is helping programs stay ahead of the curve.

This early launch provides coaches, parents, and leagues the opportunity to learn about the new standard and begin transitioning to ND6 helmets. Additionally, it allows helmets to be on-field a full year ahead of the effective date.

How does the new youth football helmet standard differ from the current helmet standard?

The ND006 standard includes requirements that NOCSAE recommends specifically for youth athletes. These include a maximum helmet weight of 3.5 pounds and impact performance specifications tailored for youth football players.

Will my current helmet still be approved for play under the new standard?

Yes. Helmets purchased before September 1, 2027 will continue to meet the previous ND002 standard and remain approved for play.

These helmets may be used for their full 10-year lifespan, as long as they are properly reconditioned and recertified in accordance with NOCSAE requirements.

Can my current helmet still be reconditioned?

Yes. All certified football helmets may be reconditioned and recertified for up to 10 years from their manufacture date, provided they continue to meet NOCSAE standards during the reconditioning process.

Who does the new standard apply to?

NOCSAE defines youth football players as those who have not yet reached the high school level. The ND006 standard applies to helmets designed for these youth athletes.

What is the difference between the three ND6 helmet models?

The Riddell ND6 line includes three different helmet models. Each helmet model is designed to meet the new youth standard while offering features that may appeal to different players, teams, and programs.
